Why Matador Is Launching Sites in 7 Languages

Travel
by David Miller Dec 3, 2013

TODAY IS a proud day for me. Since beginning editorship of Matador in 2007, I’ve cherished working with journalists, editors, and travelers from all over the globe, and have long dreamed about being able to expand our editorial to other languages.

We’ve taken a couple of big steps toward that vision today with the launch of Matador Español and Matador Português. Both sites are live, and there is a Matador Português Facebook and Matador en español Facebook page for you to follow along in your native language as well.

As we move towards the World Cup in Brazil next year, followed by the Olympics, it’s going to be super fun having ground level reporting from South America.

In addition, we’ll be launching in the coming months:

  • French
  • German
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin

Beyond just expanding our offering, the real reward for creating these new sites is that people can share perspectives and engage in their own native languages. Language encodes culture, and for a media company and community based around travel, publishing in English only allows one point of entry to the conversation.

We look forward to hearing from you all soon. Let’s build a meaningful discussion around the cultures and places we love, no matter where they are, or what language is spoken.
