Go Here, Not There: 10 Luxurious Alternatives to Lake Como Found Across Europe

Europe Italy Austria Finland Switzerland Slovenia Ireland France Germany North Macedonia Sweden Luxe Travel Epic Stays
by Katie Gavin Apr 11, 2024

Summer vacations to Europe don’t have to mean sea and sand. Fresh water is equally as appealing, and the continent’s most beautiful lake regions are simply stunning year-round. Lake Como’s crystal clear water, dramatic scenery, picturesque villages, and five-star hotels — not to mention A-list celebrity visitors — have contributed to the region’s reputation for being the most romantic (and luxurious) lake in Europe. And while this is very true, Como is breathtaking, across the continent are other bodies of water that deserve attention. From the shores of Lough Corrib in Ireland, where you can stay in an ancient castle, to the limpid turquoise water of Lake Päijänne in Finland, where you can sleep overnight in a floating hotel made entirely of glass, these are the best lakes in Europe for a luxury vacation.

We hope you love the hotels we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

Attersee, Austria

Lake Attersee, or Attersee for short, is surrounded by mountainous peaks in the Salzkammergut region in the state of Salzburg, Austria. It’s the largest lake in the country and is a popular spot year-round mainly due to its exceptional crystal-clear waters, with visibility reaching up to 10 meters.

But despite its popularity, there are pockets of solitude where you can take in the breathtaking natural beauty without the crowds — it stretches around 12 miles, after all. The region is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to pretty historic towns and villages such as Hallstatt (which has another equally attractive lake, Lake Hallstatt), Bad Ischl, and St. Wolfgang. In particular, the historic town of Attersee am Attersee, located on the western shore, is a great place to wander through the cobbled streets and admire the colorful houses.

Hotel guests are offered reduced rates for watersports like water-skiing, SUPing, and one free ride on the banana boat and complimentary tubing.

Lake Constance, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

Constance lake, Germany one of the best lakes in Europe

Photo: Oleksiy Mark/Shutterstock

Central Europe’s third-largest freshwater lake, Lake Constance, straddles Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Although it’s also one of the most popular places for a waterside vacation in Europe, there are spots on the shore that are peaceful and upscale.

The body of water is divided into two main parts: the Upper Lake (Obersee) and the Lower Lake (Untersee). The Rhine River flows through the lake, entering on the southeastern side near Bregenz (Austria) and exiting on the western side via the lower section. Lake Constance is a beautiful place to visit any time of year. For outdoor lovers, summer brings ample opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, wild swimming, and other watersports.

The quieter areas of Lake Constance in Germany are found in the smaller villages or towns away from the major tourist hubs. This southern section of the lake is more relaxed. It has a more rural feel with rolling hills, and vineyards. The region is drivable, so you can easily hop between lakeside villages such as Gaienhofen and Allensbach and hinterland towns. The city of Konstanz is an excellent place to base yourself. From here, you can easily take boat trips to explore the Untersee or rent bikes and cycle along the lakeshore.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lake Ohrid sits amidst the mountainous border North Macedonia shares with Albania. Unlike many other European luxury destinations, North Macedonia is still somewhat off-radar. Don’t expect a vast selection of five-star resorts to choose from. There is, however, a growing number of boutique hotels and upscale lodges catering to a luxury clientele.

Lake Ohrid holds the title of being one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes. Estimated to be between three and five million years old, the lake’s remarkable age has fostered the development of a unique aquatic ecosystem with over 200 endemic species. The crystal clear waters, fed by underground springs, provide a habitat for many species of fish, including the Ohrid trout, a local favorite.

There are a range of accommodation options, from double rooms with balconies and views of either the mountains or the lake to junior suites and deluxe apartments that offer more space and cooking facilities. Outside, you can enjoy a seasonal pool with a sun terrace and loungers, and in the colder months, the heated indoor pool and spa are a welcome retreat. The location on the lake is outstanding, and although it’s worth stating that the five-star rating might not hold up in an international arena, the Inex Olgica is the best hotel on the waterfront.
