Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is a hub city that is equally appealing whether you prefer the city or a safari. Or embrace both. Nairobi National Park, a wildlife sanctuary just minutes from the city center, has lions, rhinos, giraffes, and zebras against the backdrop of the city skyline. Visit the Giraffe Centre for up-close encounters with endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, or learn about conservation efforts at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage. Or venture a little farther out to Samburu National Reserve to see the “Samburu Special Five”: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk — all endemic species that are incredibly rare anywhere else in the world.

On the culture front, get a glimpse into the traditional dances, music, and crafts of the country’s different ethnic groups at Bomas of Kenya. Nairobi is also the perfect jumping off point to explore other parts of the country, from the bush to the beach. That includes coffee and tea tours to some of the world-renowned producers in the country accessible via half-day guided trips from the city.

Nairobi’s culinary scene is a melting pot of flavors, from traditional Kenyan cuisine to international fare. Sample nyama choma (grilled meat) at a local restaurant or experience fine dining at establishments like the Lord Delamere Terrace. Accommodation options range from luxury hotels like the Hemingways Nairobi to boutique hotels and guesthouses.
