There are no shortage of reasons to visit Iceland, but for lovers of the seventh art, this might be the perfect excuse to finally book that flight. This map, posted by Redditor dying_sphynx, shows the exact filming locations of 21 movies set in Iceland, so you can plan a pretty thorough cinema-themed trip through one of the world’s most beautiful countries.
Most Iceland vacations take the form of a road trip around the Ring Road, the main highway that circles the entire country. Following this route is the best way to see many of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions, and it also runs through many of the filming locations.

For a cinematic Iceland experience, start in Reykjavík and explore the peninsula south of the capital city. At the Blue Lagoon, you’ll recognize scenes from The Fifth Estate and Halo: Nightfall. Scenes from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Noah, and Flags of Our Fathers have also been filmed in the Southern Peninsula region. Then, head east along the southern coast, through Vík, toward the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where you’ll get a taste of some James Bond, Tomb Raider, and Batman action. As you continue north, make sure to stop off at Lake Mývatn. This site is a hotbed of geothermal activity and other unique geography, including perfectly round craters. There’s a reason Game of Thrones, Prometheus, Oblivion, and Noah all chose to film in the remote area.
For the most complete trip, visit the Golden Circle just northeast of Reykjavík, where The Journey to the Center of the Earth was filmed, along with more scenes from Game of Thrones and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
