50% of Europeans speak two languages and 25% speak three. In Europe, kids learn foreign languages as early as three years old and foreign language learning is generally mandatory throughout elementary school. In contrast, only ten states in the United States require foreign language learning in high school and only 19% of public school students across the country are enrolled in a foreign language class.
