When it comes to exploring Vietnam, you have plenty of options. But if you’re looking for a truly special experience, there’s nothing quite like taking a ride in a coracle. These traditional Vietnamese boats are perfect for navigating the country’s many rivers and canals, and offer an unforgettable way to explore this beautiful country.

@matadornetwork When traveling through the central coast of Vietnam you may come across these round basket boats known as coracles. They are handwoven with young bamboo. Coracle are round, wooden boats traditionally used in Vietnam and many parts of Southeast Asia. They’re typically made from bamboo and rattan, and waterproofed with tar or other materials. The design is simple yet effective; it can carry up to four passengers while still being light enough to be carried on land or towed behind another boat. They also boast an incredibly low draft which makes them perfect for navigating shallow waters.

Taking a coracle ride can be one of the most unique ways to see the country. You’ll be able to watch locals fishing on the banks of rivers and observe traditional villages as they go about their daily lives. You may even catch glimpses of wildlife such as birds and monkeys! Another benefit of using a coracle is that it’s incredibly quiet; this means you won’t disturb the peace with loud engines like you would if you were using a motorboat or canoe.

The best place to find coracles in Vietnam is in Hoi An, on the central coast near Da Nang. Here, there are several companies offering coracles for rent – ranging from traditional designs with no motor to modern versions with motors attached. Prices vary depending on what type of experience you’re looking for, but there are plenty of affordable options available. Additionally, Hoi An also offers group tours where visitors can experience the sights and sounds of rural Vietnam while floating downriver in their own personal coracle.
