Backpacker Charged With Installing Spycam in Australian Hostel

After the hotel spycam scandal that hit South Korea last week, it’s Australia’s turn to deal with creeps. A 36-year-old man from Hong Kong was arrested after being accused of hiding a camera inside a deodorant stick in the bathroom of a hostel in Bondi Beach, Sydney. After showering, the man’s roommate — a 27-year-old French woman on holiday — discovered the hidden camera on the sink of their shared suite, and took photos of it before contacting the police.

The man was arrested and charged with installing a device to observe or film others, as well as possessing surveillance devices intended for unlawful use. He was also allegedly in possession of several hard drives and other storage devices, containing videos of other women in secretly recorded private acts.

After last week’s revelation that 1,600 people were secretly recorded in a spycam porn ring in South Korean hotels, and several cases of guests finding hidden cameras in their Airbnb accommodations, travelers will almost certainly up their vigilance to protect their privacy.
