Introduction

Pie, like love, is universal. Recipes for the earliest pies date back to at least the ancient Egyptians, and today, nearly every region in the world has some sort of dish that involves a filling inside of a crust.

Matador Network took a long hard look at how pie is interpreted by different cultures. We found the definitive signature pie of every state in the US and gathered intel on the savory pies beloved in Europe, South America, and Africa. We wrote about how a pie made with young coconut became a sensation in the Philippines and why the saying should be “as American as pumpkin pie,” not apple.

Food traditions are as diverse as our planet, but if there’s one thing you can guarantee, it’s that some type of pie will be available no matter where your travels take you.
