Manitoulin Island, in Ontario, is the largest freshwater island on the planet and is home to six Anishinaabe communities. Anong Beam is a painter who comes from a family of artists, and her creative work is intimately entwined with her home–she collects natural materials from the island to create paints with which to bring Manitoulin to life on her canvasses. “There’s a thrill to be able to share the island,” she says. To Beam, the Manitoulin experience is to be immersed in water, to be surrounded by the life and love of the natural world.
