The Empire State Building, Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Guggenheim, Central Park, Broadway, Yankees Stadium -- the list of iconic New York City landmarks is extensive, almost overwhelming.

Along with the big name attractions, there are thousands of cafes, bars, theaters, and clubs that are there to be discovered.

There are tiny churches next to skyscrapers, street vendors selling hot dogs, pretzels, falafels, and more, musicians playing on the sidewalk, celebrities walking their dogs, people doing yoga in the park, cobblestoned streets in Greenwich Village, hipsters downing PBR in Brooklyn --there is a place for everyone in New York City. The diversity of the nearly 19 million people live in the city can be seen in part in the languages you can hear on the street - there are over 700 languages spoken.

New York City is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Manhattan, the oldest and arguably the most famous borough, is also one of the easiest to get around with much of its 23 square miles laid out on a grid system. The mass transit system runs throughout all five boroughs, and you're never too far away from a bus or subway stop. Or there's always the famous yellow taxis.

The winters are cold and snowy, and the summers are hot with the parks filling up with sun bathers and picnickers on a daily basis.

Matador has many contributors who call or have called New York home, and many more who have passed through. With articles on what not to do, how to get an apartment if you decide to stay, how to camp for free, 9/11 remembrances, a budget guide, and where to eat and drink, Matador can help you sample what New York has to offer. Just a sample, because even if you live there your entire life, there will always be something new.
